Old Church of Rannoch
Music in Rannoch Concert
“A versatile and exciting ensemble”. International Academy of Performing Arts and Sciences.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the talented Roth Guitar Duo perform in Kinloch Rannoch, in the wonderful acoustic of The Old Church.
Emma Smith and Sam Rodwell met while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and in 2014 formed the Roth Guitar Duo. They made their debut at London’s prestigious concert venue St Martin-in-the-Fields in 2016.
The duo was recently awarded Second Prize in the ENKOR International Music Competition.
They will play a colourful programme of music from all over the world, from the baroque era to the present day including:
a beautiful arrangement of an early 18th-century concerto for oboe and strings by Italian composer Alessandro Marcello (1673 – 1747);
two engaging works by Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895 – 1968) inspired by baroque keyboard pieces;
the famous Spanish dance by Manuel de Falla (1876 – 1946) from his opera La Vida Breve; (YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5FaalIpVVs)
one of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla’s best known tangos Lo Que Vendra;
the beautiful lilting Farewell to Stromness by Peter Maxwell Davies (1934 – 2016); (YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QEDqDqPQus)
a gentle and lyrical piece by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (1930 – 1996) based on the music originally composed for the film Bad Boy;
two pieces both written in the 1990s – Steve Reich’s hypnotic Nagoya Guitars, and Australian composer Nigel Westlake’s Songs from the Forest; a delightful piece entitled Homecoming by classical guitarist and composer Yvonne Bloor written for the Roth Duo in 2018.
Tickets for the concert are £8 at the door, with free admission for children. Refreshments (a glass of wine or a soft drink, and nibbles) will be served during the interval.
